15-30 days before move

Eliminate everything you do not want to move.

Arrange for new auto and home insurance.

Arrange for or start collecting the cartons you need to start packing.

Start to pack non-essential items.

Notify post office and fill out change of address forms.

Have all your W-2's and other tax forms forwarded.

Notify credit card companies of your change of address.

Notify schools and make arrangements for school records to be sent to the new school.

Ask Doctor and Dentist for referrals; transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays. Obtain or transfer medical records.

Arrange to have someone watch children and pets during the move.

Get hotel reservations if needed.

Get airline reservations, if needed.

8-14 Days before Move

Make arrangements to service your appliances at your current and your new home.

Collect all clothing and items to be repaired or cleaned.

Return things borrowed, collect things loaned.

Arrange transfer of banking services.

Arrange to discontinue utility service and connect at new residence. (Gas, Electric, water, telephone, cable, garbage) Get refunds on any deposits made.

1-7 days before Move

Dispose of all flammables, cleaning fluids, bleach, paint, aerosol cans, and ammunition.

Drain gas and oil from power equipment. (Mower, weedeater, etc)

Set things aside to pack in car.

Have all fragile items boxed, marked and set aside.

Disconnect TV and antenna.

Discontinue regular services and deliveries.

Empty freezer; plan use of food.

Defrost and clean refrigerator.

Pack a box of items you will need as soon as you arrive.

Moving Day

Finish packing personal items, strip and pack bedding.

Have extra box available for last minute items.

Have an extra box or bag for last minute trash.

Accompany the driver during the inventory and check the condition of your goods as they are loaded.

Sign the bill of lading and make sure the delivery address is correct. Give driver directions to your new home.

Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure all are empty.

Leave old keys with REALTOR or neighbor.

Carry jewelry and documents yourself.

At your new address

Check movers inventory to assure you have received all your goods.

Obtain vehicle stickers.

Register children at new school.

Arrange for medical services; Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, etc.

Have new address recorded on driver's license.

Register to vote.

Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater, and furnace.

Ask mailman for any mail he may be holding for your arrival.
